Bible verses about healing: 16 passages for when you or someone you love is sick

Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed; save me, and I will be saved, for You are my praise.

Jeremiah prayed this while being mocked and opposed. It is a short, direct request, and it rests the outcome on God: if you heal me, I will be healed.

saying, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God, and do what is right in His eyes, and pay attention to His commands, and keep all His statutes, then I will not bring on you any of the diseases I inflicted on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you.”

Given at Marah, three days after the Red Sea, when God made bitter water drinkable. Here God first names himself the LORD who heals you.

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and do not forget all His kind deeds— He who forgives all your iniquities and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the Pit and crowns you with loving devotion and compassion,

The King James says forget not all his benefits. Healing sits in a list beside forgiveness and rescue. Remembering what God has already done is part of the prayer.

Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. The Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.

Oil was also medicine in the ancient world; the Good Samaritan poured it on wounds (Luke 10:34). James says if he has sinned, which quietly assumes that not every sickness is caused by sin.

Beloved, I pray that in every way you may prosper and enjoy good health, as your soul also prospers.

An elder writing to his friend Gaius. Praying for the health of others is a normal, loving part of Christian friendship.

Then a leper came to Jesus, begging on his knees: “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” He said. “Be clean!”

Lepers were kept away from everyone. Jesus could have healed with a word. He chose to touch the man first.

“Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction.”

The woman had been ill for twelve years and spent everything on doctors (Mark 5:26). Jesus stops the crowd to call her daughter and send her away in peace, healed in body and restored among people.

On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.

Jesus uses doctors as a picture of his own work. Luke, who wrote a Gospel, was himself a physician (Colossians 4:14). Faith and medicine are not rivals.

“The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed,

In his hometown synagogue Jesus read Isaiah 61 and said it was being fulfilled. Recovery of sight sits beside freedom for captives: his healing reaches the whole person.

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Some of the deepest wounds are invisible. God is described here as a careful healer who binds them up, the way you would dress a cut.

But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.

Peter quotes this line and applies it to sin and forgiveness (1 Peter 2:24). The deepest healing the Bible describes is being made right with God.

O LORD my God, I cried to You for help, and You healed me.

A psalm of thanks from someone who had been near death. Writing down what God has done, as David did, strengthens faith for the next time you need it.

A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.

Ancient wisdom that body and spirit affect each other. A crushed spirit dries up the bones; joy works like medicine.

But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me.

Paul asked three times for his thorn in the flesh to be taken away (2 Corinthians 12:8). The answer was not yes, but it was not silence either: grace enough, and strength in weakness.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, yet our inner self is being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal glory that is far beyond comparison.

Paul is honest that the outer self is wasting away. Something else is being renewed day by day, and it will outlast the body.

The Bible ends where it began, with a tree of life, now beside a river in a city. Its leaves are for healing. Every healing now is a small preview of that one.
