Bible verses about trust: 17 passages for when you cannot see the way

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

To lean is to put your full weight on something. Your own understanding is not useless, but it cannot hold all of you.

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.

The verse just before is about God freely pardoning. His higher ways include a mercy far bigger than ours, not only plans we cannot follow.

And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.

Paul does not say all things are good. He says God is at work in all of them, including the ones that hurt.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope.

Written to exiles who had just been told to settle in Babylon for seventy years. The hope was real, but it came with a long wait.

But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him. He is like a tree planted by the waters that sends out its roots toward the stream. It does not fear when the heat comes, and its leaves are always green. It does not worry in a year of drought, nor does it cease to produce fruit.

The tree still faces heat and drought; it simply does not dry up. The verses just before contrast it with a shrub in the desert, the person who trusts only in people.

Some trust in chariots and others in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.

Chariots and horses were the most advanced military power of the day. Every age has its own version of what we are tempted to rely on.

It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes.

People, even powerful ones, are not the enemy here. They are simply not strong enough to be your refuge.

Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will do it.

Commit literally means roll: roll your way onto the LORD, like shifting a load you cannot carry. Trust here comes with doing good and staying put.

Commit your works to the LORD and your plans will be achieved.

Planning is not the opposite of trust. The verse assumes you have plans and invites you to hand them to God.

When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise— in God I trust. I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

The heading says David wrote this when the Philistines seized him in Gath. Notice he says when I am afraid, not if. Trust is a decision made while the fear is still there.

You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You. Trust in the LORD forever, because GOD the LORD is the Rock eternal.

Perfect peace is shalom repeated twice in Hebrew: peace, peace. God is called the Rock eternal, something that will still be there when everything else moves.

Those who know Your name trust in You, for You, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You.

Trust follows knowing. The more you learn of who God is, the easier it becomes to lean on him.

The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of distress; He cares for those who trust in Him.

Nahum is a short book mostly about judgment on Nineveh. This line of tenderness sits right in the middle of it.

Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts before Him. God is our refuge. Selah

Trust is not the same as keeping quiet. The psalm pairs it with pouring out your heart, the whole of it.

But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.

The Hebrew word for wait carries the sense of hopeful expectation, not idle time. The strength comes to people who are still looking up.

But I have trusted in Your loving devotion; my heart will rejoice in Your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, for He has been good to me.

This psalm opens by asking how long four times. The trust at the end comes after the complaint, not instead of it.

If the God whom we serve exists, then He is able to deliver us from the blazing fiery furnace and from your hand, O king. But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden statue you have set up.”

Three young men facing a furnace say God is able to save them, and even if he does not, they will not bow. Trust in God is not the same as certainty about the outcome.
