Versiah vs YouVersion: a Bible library or a Bible you can talk to (2026)
Choose YouVersion if you want a completely free Bible app with thousands of translations, thousands of reading plans and a huge community. Choose Versiah if you want to ask the Bible real questions and get answers that cite exact verses you can open in context, by text or live voice call. Many people will be well served by using both.
The short answer
YouVersion is the Bible library: free, enormous, and built for reading and following plans. Versiah is the Bible you can talk to: you bring a question, a fear or a passage you do not understand, and it answers from Scripture with every verse cited. If you want to read in the NIV or ESV, or in almost any language on earth, use YouVersion. If you want a conversation grounded in the Bible, try Versiah.
Versiah is our app, so read our take with that in mind. The YouVersion details below come from its official website and App Store listing as of September 2026.

Where YouVersion shines
The Bible App by YouVersion, made by Life.Church, is one of the most generous things in the Christian world. It is hard to overstate how much it gives away, and it is the right first Bible app for a lot of people.
- It is free. No subscription, and its App Store listing shows no in-app purchases as of September 2026.
- The translation library is unmatched. Its site lists more than 3,500 Bible versions in more than 2,300 languages. In English that includes the NIV, ESV, NLT and KJV, which Versiah does not offer (apart from the KJV).
- Plans for everything. Thousands of reading plans and devotionals lead you through books of the Bible and topics like grief, marriage or anxiety.
- Built for friends and churches. You can study with friends, see their highlights and notes, share prayer cards, and churches can use YouVersion’s own tools.
- It runs almost everywhere. Phones, tablets, Apple TV, Apple Vision and the web at bible.com.
If your main goal is to read the Bible every day in a translation you love, and to follow a plan with people you know, YouVersion does that superbly and costs nothing.
Where Versiah is different
Reading plans are wonderful when you know where you want to go. But a lot of faith happens in the moments in between: a question at 2am, a verse that confuses you, a fear you have not told anyone. Versiah is built for those moments. The idea is simple: what if your Bible was your friend?
Ask anything, and see the verses
You type or say what is on your mind, and Versiah answers with real verses and teaching straight from Scripture. Every answer cites exact verses you can open and read in context. It does not invent verses: references are checked against the actual Bible text. We wrote more about why that matters.
Talk out loud
Live voice calls let you speak to Versiah the way you would to a friend. When it reads a passage, the words appear on screen so you can follow.
Live rooms, not just shared notes
Fellowship rooms are live spaces for prayer, Bible study or worship. Start one for your family or small group, and come to share or simply listen.
Help for people who teach
- Study verse: tap any verse to explore its meaning and context.
- Study preparation: ask for passages on a topic to prepare a small group or Sunday lesson.
- Ministry Guides: ministers turn sermons, books and studies into a Guide you can ask questions of. Answers quote their teaching and the Bible exactly and keep Scripture, the minister’s words and the app’s reflection clearly apart. A Guide is not the minister speaking.
Our limits, plainly: Versiah is new in 2026 with a much smaller community. It has seven public-domain translations, with no NIV, ESV, NLT or NKJV licence yet. It has no plan library on the scale of YouVersion, and it is not free for full access. It is a study companion, not a pastor or a replacement for church or for reading the Bible yourself.
Pricing
YouVersion: free to download and use as of September 2026, with no in-app purchases shown on its App Store listing.
Versiah: free to download. Full access is a paid plan, either an in-app subscription or a one-time Bible Pass bought on the website that never renews automatically. You can also give a Bible Pass to someone else.
Who should choose which
- Choose YouVersion if you want the NIV, ESV or NLT, read in a language other than English, French or Spanish, or want a free app with a huge choice of plans.
- Choose YouVersion if your church or friends already use it and you want to study together through shared plans and notes.
- Choose Versiah if you have questions you want answered from Scripture, with every verse cited so you can check it yourself.
- Choose Versiah if you would rather talk than type, or you want live rooms to pray and study with your group.
Using both
These apps fit together well. Follow a YouVersion plan in the morning, and when something in the passage stops you, open Versiah and ask about it. Or listen to the daily word on the way to work and do your longer reading in YouVersion. If you are still choosing a translation, our guide to which Bible translation is best may help, and you can see more options on our YouVersion alternatives page.
