He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot fathom the work that God has done from beginning to end.

Eternity set in the human heart explains a familiar ache: why nothing temporary ever quite satisfies.

The Hebrew word for unformed body describes an embryo. God’s attention to your life began before anyone else knew you existed.

Jeremiah immediately protested that he was too young (Jeremiah 1:6). God’s call rarely waits for us to feel ready.

He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

The question before it is whether God wants thousands of rams or rivers of oil. The answer is simpler and harder: justice, mercy and humility.

Jesus declared, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Asked for the greatest commandment, Jesus gave two, from Deuteronomy and Leviticus. Every other purpose hangs on these.

When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter is this: Fear God and keep His commandments, because this is the whole duty of man.

The conclusion of a whole book spent searching for meaning in work, pleasure and wisdom. After all that, the answer is short.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.

Paul picks the most ordinary activities he can think of, eating and drinking. Purpose is not only for big moments.

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.

The Greek word for workmanship, poiema, gives us the word poem. It comes right after Paul says we are saved by grace, not works: the good works are the result, not the price.

As good stewards of the manifold grace of God, each of you should use whatever gift he has received to serve one another.

A steward manages what belongs to someone else. Your gifts are on loan, and they are meant to serve other people.

Just as each of us has one body with many members, and not all members have the same function, so in Christ we who are many are one body, and each member belongs to one another. We have different gifts according to the grace given us. If one’s gift is prophecy, let him use it in proportion to his faith;

Purpose is found in a body, not alone. A hand only makes sense attached to the rest.

You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Jesus says you are the light of the world, not try to become it. The question is only whether the lamp is under a basket.

You did not choose Me, but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will remain—so that whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.

The disciples did not apply for the job. Jesus chose them, and the fruit he appointed them to bear was meant to last.

Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the purpose of the LORD will prevail.

Your plans can change without God’s purpose changing. That is meant to be a relief.

And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.

It does not say all things are good. It says God works in all things for good, and the next verse names the good: becoming like Jesus.

The LORD will fulfill His purpose for me. O LORD, Your loving devotion endures forever— do not abandon the works of Your hands.

Confidence and a request in the same breath: the LORD will fulfil his purpose for me, and please do not abandon me.

For when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep. His body was buried with his fathers and saw decay.

David served God’s purpose in his own generation, and then died. You do not need a purpose for all time, only for your time.

For it is God who works in you to will and to act on behalf of His good purpose.

God works in you to will, not only to act. Even the desire to live for him is part of his work.
