Bible verses about work: 19 passages for Monday mornings and long weeks

Then the LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.

Work comes before the fall, not after it. The two Hebrew words for cultivate and keep are later used for the priests serving in the tabernacle, so tending a garden was a kind of worship.

Nothing is better for a man than to eat and drink and enjoy his work. I have also seen that this is from the hand of God.

The Teacher tried pleasure, projects and wealth looking for meaning. He lands on something small: enjoying the work in front of you is a gift from God.

Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being, for the Lord and not for men, because you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as your reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Paul first wrote this to slaves in Colossae, people with no say over their jobs. If their work could be done for the Lord, so can yours.

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable. Always excel in the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

This closes Paul’s long chapter on the resurrection. Because the future is real, what you do for the Lord now is not wasted.

May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish for us the work of our hands— yes, establish the work of our hands!

The only psalm credited to Moses spends most of its lines on how short life is. It ends by asking God to make the work of our hands last.

Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will be stationed in the presence of kings; he will not stand before obscure men.

The Hebrew word for skilled is the same one used of Ezra as a skilled scribe. Competence is a quiet form of faithfulness, and it gets noticed.

Whatever you find to do with your hands, do it with all your might, for in Sheol, where you are going, there is no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.

The reason given is sobering: life is short. Do the thing in front of you with all your strength while you can.

And the LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving in the household of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the LORD was with him and made him prosper in all he did,

Joseph was a slave in a foreign house when this was written about him. God’s presence showed up in a job he never chose.

So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it to go down to you?”

Nehemiah’s enemies invited him to a meeting that was really a trap. His answer is a model for protecting focused work from distraction.

A song of ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain; unless the LORD protects the city, its watchmen stand guard in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for bread to eat— for He gives sleep to His beloved.

A song credited to Solomon, who knew about building. Early mornings and late nights do not add up to security. Sleep is described as a gift God gives to those he loves.

Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and pursuit of the wind.

Two verses earlier the Teacher notes that much hard work is driven by envy of a neighbour. One handful with quiet is the better trade.

And He said to them, “Come with Me privately to a solitary place, and let us rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.

The disciples had just come back from a busy mission. Jesus is the one who suggests rest, and Mark adds that they had not even had time to eat.

But Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “What you are doing is not good. Surely you and these people with you will wear yourselves out, because the task is too heavy for you. You cannot handle it alone.

Moses was hearing every dispute himself from morning to evening. His father-in-law saw the burnout coming and told him to share the load.

Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God, on which you must not do any work—neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant or livestock, nor the foreigner within your gates.

The Sabbath command covered servants, foreigners and even animals. Rest was not a perk for the powerful but a gift for the whole workforce.

Serve with good will, as to the Lord and not to men, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.

Good will is the key phrase: not just doing the task, but doing it without resentment. The reward does not depend on whether your manager notices.

Masters, supply your slaves with what is right and fair, since you know that you also have a Master in heaven.

Paul addresses employers as well as workers. Anyone with authority at work answers to a Master of their own.

Do not oppress a hired hand who is poor and needy, whether he is a brother or a foreigner residing in one of your towns. You are to pay his wages each day before sunset, because he is poor and depends on them. Otherwise he may cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.

Wages were to be paid the same day, because a poor worker depended on them. Paying people late is treated as a moral issue, not an admin one.

Commit your works to the LORD and your plans will be achieved.

The Hebrew verb behind commit means to roll. You roll your work onto the Lord, like a load too heavy to carry on your own.

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business, and make a profit.” You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that.”

James does not forbid business plans. He forbids making them as though tomorrow belongs to you.
