Bible verses about stress: 17 passages for when you are stretched too thin
The Bible does not promise a life without pressure, but it offers rest for the weary (Matthew 11:28-30), permission to stop (Psalm 46:10), and the reminder that you were never meant to carry everything alone (Exodus 18:18). Jesus himself took his tired friends away to rest. These 17 passages are gathered here in the Berean Standard Bible, with the King James wording alongside.
When you are carrying more than you can hold
Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”Matthew 11:28-30 (BSB)
A yoke joined two animals so they shared the load. The word translated easy also means well-fitting. Jesus does not offer no yoke, but one that does not rub.
King James Version
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. But Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “What you are doing is not good. Surely you and these people with you will wear yourselves out, because the task is too heavy for you. You cannot handle it alone.Exodus 18:17-18 (BSB)
Moses was hearing cases from morning to evening (Exodus 18:13). His father-in-law saw what he could not: this pace would wear out Moses and everyone waiting on him. The fix was to share the work.
King James Version
And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good. Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.Galatians 6:2 (BSB)
A few verses later Paul says each should carry his own load (Galatians 6:5). The words differ: a load is your daily pack, a burden is a weight too heavy for one person. Those you share.
King James Version
Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. We are hard pressed on all sides, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (BSB)
Paul admits the pressure from every side. The line he draws is between pressed and crushed. You can be the first without becoming the second.
King James Version
We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; When there is too much to do
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord replied, “you are worried and upset about many things. But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her.”Luke 10:41-42 (BSB)
Martha was doing something good: feeding guests. Jesus says her name twice, gently, and points not to her work but to the worry and distraction around it.
King James Version
And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.And He said to them, “Come with Me privately to a solitary place, and let us rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.Mark 6:31 (BSB)
The disciples had just come back from their mission, and Mark tells this straight after the account of John the Baptist being killed. Jesus did not hand them more work. He took them away to rest and eat.
King James Version
And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for bread to eat— for He gives sleep to His beloved.Psalm 127:2 (BSB)
A song for pilgrims, credited to Solomon, the great builder. Working late and rising early does not guarantee anything; sleep itself is a gift God gives.
King James Version
It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and pursuit of the wind.Ecclesiastes 4:6 (BSB)
One handful with quiet is better than two handfuls with strain. The Teacher had tried the two-handed life and found it was chasing the wind.
King James Version
Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit. My times are in Your hands; deliver me from my enemies and from those who pursue me.Psalm 31:15 (BSB)
The same psalm gave Jesus his last words on the cross (Psalm 31:5, Luke 23:46). If your times are in his hands, your calendar is not the final word.
King James Version
My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.When the pressure is closing in
For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments. Of David. Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer. From the ends of the earth I call out to You whenever my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.Psalm 61:1-2 (BSB)
Faint is the word for a heart that has run out. The prayer is not for the problem to shrink, but to be led to a rock higher than you, somewhere to see from.
King James Version
To the chief Musician upon Neginah, A Psalm of David. Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From His temple He heard my voice, and my cry for His help reached His ears.Psalm 18:6 (BSB)
The heading places this after David was rescued from Saul. Distress here is literally a tight place. The cry went up from somewhere narrow and was heard.
King James Version
In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.Commit your works to the LORD and your plans will be achieved.Proverbs 16:3 (BSB)
The Hebrew word for commit means to roll. Picture rolling a weight off your shoulders and onto someone strong enough to carry it.
King James Version
Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established. When you need permission to stop
“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted over the earth.”Psalm 46:10 (BSB)
Be still translates a word that means to let go or to stop striving. It is said over a world in uproar, and it is a command, not a suggestion.
King James Version
Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. For the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel, has said: “By repentance and rest you would be saved; your strength would lie in quiet confidence— but you were not willing.”Isaiah 30:15 (BSB)
Judah wanted to solve its crisis by running to Egypt for help and relying on fast horses (Isaiah 30:2, 16). God offered rest and quiet trust instead. The sad line is but you were not willing.
King James Version
For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not. Then Jesus declared, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.Mark 2:27 (BSB)
Jesus said this when critics complained that his hungry disciples picked grain on the Sabbath. Rest was made as a gift for people, not as one more rule to stress about.
King James Version
And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:For the choirmaster. According to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. In God alone my soul finds rest; my salvation comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation. He is my fortress; I will never be shaken.Psalm 62:1-2 (BSB)
The word alone keeps coming back in this psalm. Rest is found in God alone, which quietly means not in finishing the list.
King James Version
To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David. Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved. And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished.Genesis 2:2-3 (BSB)
God did not rest because he was tired. He rested, then blessed the day of rest and set it apart. Stopping is built into creation, not squeezed in after the work is done.
King James Version
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. How to use these verses on a stressful day
- Stop for two minutes. Before the next task, sit down and breathe slowly. Psalm 46:10 is a command to pause, not a reward for finishing.
- Write down what is pressing on you. Then pray over the list item by item, as Proverbs 16:3 suggests: roll each one over to God.
- Ask what can be shared. Moses needed Jethro to tell him he could not do it alone. Is there one thing you could hand to someone else this week?
- Protect one pocket of rest. Jesus took his friends away to eat. A meal without a screen or a walk without a phone counts.
On busy days, listening can be easier than reading. Versiah has an audio Bible with a choice of reading voices, so you can hear a psalm on a commute or a walk. For more on prayer under pressure, see how to pray when anxious.
Long-term stress affects sleep, health and mood. If you are exhausted most days, please talk to a doctor or counsellor as well as praying. If you feel unable to cope or are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 in the US, or your local emergency number.
Questions people ask
What does the Bible say about stress?
The Bible recognises pressure honestly (2 Corinthians 4:8) and responds with an invitation to rest in Christ (Matthew 11:28-30), to hand your burdens to God (Psalm 55:22), and to share the load with others (Galatians 6:2). It also builds rest into life through the Sabbath.
Is stress a sin?
No. Feeling stressed is a normal human response to pressure. Jesus gently corrected Martha for being worried and distracted, but he did not call her sinful for being busy. Scripture treats stress as something to bring to God, not something to be ashamed of.
What is the best Bible verse for stress?
Matthew 11:28-30 is the most loved, because Jesus himself offers rest to everyone who is weary and burdened. Psalm 46:10 is a good short verse for a moment when you need to stop and remember who is in control.
What does the Bible say about burnout?
Elijah reached the end of himself and asked to die, and God answered first with sleep and food (1 Kings 19:5-7). Moses was told by Jethro that his workload was not good and would wear him out (Exodus 18:17-18). Both stories treat exhaustion as real and treat rest and help as part of the answer.
