Bible verses about depression: 16 passages for when the darkness will not lift

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him for the salvation of His presence.

The psalmist talks to his own soul, and he asks the same question three times across Psalms 42 and 43. Hope here is not a feeling he has yet. It is something he chooses to point himself toward.

For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? How long must I wrestle in my soul, with sorrow in my heart each day? How long will my enemy dominate me?

How long appears four times in two verses. The Bible gives you words for feeling forgotten by God, and this short psalm still turns to trust by its sixth verse.

A song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. For the choirmaster. According to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil of Heman the Ezrahite. O LORD, the God of my salvation, day and night I cry out before You. May my prayer come before You; incline Your ear to my cry. For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol.

Psalm 88 is the one psalm that ends without any turn toward light: its last line calls darkness the closest companion. That it sits in Scripture at all says God can hold prayers like this.

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.

Near is the promise. Not that the heartbreak will be explained, but that God comes close to the people who are most crushed.

Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” And he looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again. A second time the angel of the LORD returned and touched him, saying, “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.”

Just before this, Elijah had prayed to die (1 Kings 19:4). God did not argue or lecture. An angel let him sleep, fed him twice and said the journey was too much for him.

For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD; He inclined to me and heard my cry. He lifted me up from the pit of despair, out of the miry clay; He set my feet upon a rock, and made my footsteps firm. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.

Waiting patiently came before the rescue. The miry pit is a picture of mud where every effort to climb out makes you sink further. Someone else lifts you out.

to console the mourners in Zion— to give them a crown of beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and a garment of praise for a spirit of despair. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.

The King James calls it the spirit of heaviness, a close description of depression. Jesus read the start of this chapter aloud in Nazareth as a summary of his work (Luke 4:18).

Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope: Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!

Written in the ruins of Jerusalem and traditionally linked to Jeremiah. The hope comes in the middle chapter of a book of grief, and it is a decision to remember, made while nothing had changed.

If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light become night around me”— even the darkness is not dark to You, but the night shines like the day, for darkness is as light to You.

You may feel the dark has swallowed you. This verse says it cannot hide you from God, because to him the night is as bright as day.

Answer me quickly, O LORD; my spirit fails. Do not hide Your face from me, or I will be like those who descend to the Pit. Let me hear Your loving devotion in the morning, for I have put my trust in You. Teach me the way I should walk, for to You I lift up my soul.

My spirit fails is an honest prayer. David asks to hear of the love of God in the morning: a small, specific request for the next few hours.

Then He said to them, “My soul is consumed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with Me.”

In Gethsemane Jesus said his soul was overwhelmed with sorrow, and he asked his friends to stay with him. He knows this weight from the inside, and he did not face it alone by choice.

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin.

Sympathize means to suffer with. Jesus does not look down on weakness from a distance. He understands it.

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words.

When you cannot find words to pray, you are not left alone. The Spirit prays for you with groans too deep for words.

A bruised reed He will not break and a smoldering wick He will not extinguish; He will faithfully bring forth justice.

A bruised reed and a lamp wick that is barely smoking: two things most people would throw away. Matthew applies this verse to Jesus (Matthew 12:20). He handles the fragile gently.

For His anger is fleeting, but His favor lasts a lifetime. Weeping may stay the night, but joy comes in the morning.

Weeping is allowed to stay the night. The verse does not rush the morning, but it promises that morning comes.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, yet our inner self is being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal glory that is far beyond comparison.

Paul had been beaten, shipwrecked and despaired of life (2 Corinthians 1:8). He calls the renewal day by day: small and daily, not all at once.
